Motor Selection for Pumps and Water Systems

Selecting a pump motor involves more than matching rated power.
The motor must suit the pump's operating speed, load requirements,
starting method, electrical supply and installation conditions.
Whether the project involves a new pump package or the replacement
of an existing motor, these details provide the basis for reliable
equipment selection.
Shangli offers general-purpose induction motors, dedicated inverter-duty motors, integrated-drive permanent magnet synchronous motors and high-voltage induction motors for evaluation in pump applications. The appropriate series depends on the specific equipment and operating conditions.
Pump Applications We Can Discuss
Typical enquiries include water supply and booster systems, circulation pumps, HVAC water systems and industrial fluid-handling equipment. The TYCP3 series is specifically described in our catalogue for applications including multistage booster pumps, single-stage inline pumps, HVAC and industrial fluid systems.
For each application, compatibility must be checked against the pump manufacturer's requirements. A motor suitable for one pump arrangement may require a different shaft, flange, speed or control configuration for another.
Motor Options for Different Pump Requirements
| Application Requirement | Motor Series to Consider | Selection Notes |
|---|---|---|
| General-purpose low-voltage pump drives | YE3, YE4 and YE5 | Three-phase induction motor options. Select the required output, speed, efficiency specification and mounting arrangement from the relevant model data. |
| Pump drives requiring variable-speed operation | YPT3 | A dedicated inverter-duty induction motor series with IC416 cooling. Confirm the operating speed range, load requirements and compatibility with the selected drive. |
| Pump packages requiring an integrated motor and drive | TYCP3 | An integrated variable-frequency permanent magnet synchronous motor series. Confirm the pump interface, electrical input, operating speed and required control functions. |
| Pump installations with a high-voltage motor supply | Y, YKS and YKK | High-voltage induction motor families with different enclosure and cooling arrangements. Confirm the available model rating and site cooling conditions. |
| Pump installations in classified hazardous areas | Appropriately specified explosion-protected motor | A separate selection assessment is required. The motor's protection marking and certification must match the installation requirements. |
This table is an initial selection guide, not a statement that every series or configuration is suitable for every pump. Final selection requires confirmation of the complete motor specification.
General-Purpose Induction Motors: YE3, YE4 and YE5
The YE series provides general-purpose three-phase induction motor options for pump equipment. The catalogue describes these motors as totally enclosed, self-fan-cooled squirrel-cage designs. Selection should be based on the required operating point and the technical data for the individual model.
For example, the supplied YE3 catalogue information specifies 380 V or 400 V, 50 Hz, IP55 enclosure protection, IC411 cooling and continuous duty S1. These are YE3 reference specifications, not default specifications for every Shangli motor. Alternative supply or operating requirements should be confirmed before ordering.
When comparing efficiency options, request the rated efficiency for the selected power and pole configuration. Motor efficiency alone does not establish the energy consumption of the complete pump system.
Variable-Speed Pump Drives: YPT3
The YPT3 series is designed for operation with a variable-frequency drive and uses a dedicated insulation system for inverter supply. Catalogue reference specifications include IP55 enclosure protection and IC416 cooling with a separately driven ventilation system.
For a variable-speed pump project, provide the required minimum, normal and maximum operating speeds together with the pump's load requirements. The allowable frequency range must be checked for the selected motor configuration rather than assumed from the series name.
Please also identify the proposed drive and confirm whether your enquiry is for the motor only or for a coordinated motor-and-drive selection. A separate variable-frequency drive should not be assumed to be included in a YPT3 motor quotation.
Integrated Permanent Magnet Motor and Drive: TYCP3
The TYCP3 series combines a permanent magnet synchronous motor with an integrated variable-frequency drive. It provides an alternative motor-and-drive arrangement for compatible pump packages.
The supplied 3,000 r/min technical table lists motor outputs from 1.5 to 30 kW. Availability and suitability must be confirmed for the required pump connection and operating point. Performance data for another speed should be requested separately.
Before selection, confirm the shaft and flange dimensions, available installation space, incoming power supply and the control interface required by the pump system. Functions such as pressure regulation, communication or multi-pump coordination must be agreed explicitly; they should not be assumed from the presence of an integrated drive.
A TYCP3 motor enquiry does not automatically include the pump, pipework or a complete booster system. Please specify the equipment you need us to supply.
High-Voltage Pump Drives: Y, YKS and YKK
For projects requiring a high-voltage motor, the Y, YKS and YKK families provide different ventilation and heat-exchanger arrangements. Cooling conditions are an important part of the selection discussion.
Y series: catalogue options include open ventilation and duct-ventilated arrangements. Confirm the enclosure protection and ventilation conditions required by the installation.
YKS series: uses an air-to-water cooling arrangement. Cooling-water availability and the specified water conditions must be confirmed for the selected motor.
YKK series: uses an air-to-air cooling arrangement. Confirm ambient conditions and the installation space needed for cooling and maintenance.
Provide the required voltage, output, speed, starting method and pump load information so that the available configuration can be checked. General family ranges do not mean that every combination of power, voltage and pole count is available.
What to Check Before Ordering
Pump and load information: pump type, required shaft power, operating speed and available pump performance data.
Electrical supply: voltage, frequency, starting method and whether a variable-frequency drive will be used.
Mechanical connection: mounting arrangement, shaft dimensions, flange dimensions, coupling requirements and any specified axial or radial loads.
Operating duty: running hours, starting frequency and the required speed range.
Site conditions: ambient temperature, altitude, indoor or outdoor installation, moisture, corrosion exposure and cooling provisions.
Project requirements: destination country, required approvals, inspection documents, quantity and requested delivery date.
Replacing an Existing Pump Motor
For replacement enquiries, send a clear photograph of the existing motor nameplate and, where available, the mounting drawing. Photographs of the shaft, flange, coupling and installed motor can help clarify the mechanical arrangement.
Matching only the power rating is not sufficient to establish interchangeability. Speed, electrical characteristics, mounting dimensions, shaft details and operating conditions must also be checked.
Hazardous-Area and Special-Environment Requirements
Do not treat a general-purpose pump motor as an explosion-protected motor. If the installation is in a classified gas or dust atmosphere, provide the site classification and required protection marking for a separate technical review.
Likewise, suitability for submersible service, washdown, corrosive conditions or other special environments must be confirmed explicitly. These capabilities should not be inferred from the general application description.
