Motor Selection for Industrial Fans and Blowers

Selecting a fan or blower motor starts with the driven equipment,
its power requirements and its operating speed. The motor must also
suit the starting conditions, control method, mechanical connection
and installation environment.
Shangli offers general-purpose induction motors, dedicated inverter-duty motors, high-voltage induction motors and explosion-protected motor series for evaluation in fan and blower applications. The appropriate configuration depends on the equipment requirements and site conditions.
Start with the Fan or Blower Requirements
Enquiries may involve ventilation fans, process-air equipment, centrifugal or axial fans, and other industrial blower systems. These applications should not be treated as having identical motor requirements.
Provide the fan or blower manufacturer's specified motor power, operating speed and starting requirements wherever possible. If the equipment has not yet been selected, share the available airflow, pressure and equipment performance information so that the motor requirements can be clarified with the equipment supplier.
Also identify whether the motor is directly coupled to the equipment, connected through a belt drive or used with another transmission arrangement. The mechanical connection is an important part of motor selection.
Motor Options for Different Operating Requirements
| Application Requirement | Motor Series to Consider | What to Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| General-purpose low-voltage fan and blower drives | YE3, YE4 and YE5 | Required output, operating speed, electrical supply, efficiency specification, mounting arrangement and starting conditions. |
| Variable-speed operation with an external drive | YPT3 | Required speed range, load characteristics, drive compatibility and the supply requirements of the independent cooling fan. |
| Fan or blower installations requiring a high-voltage motor | Y, YKS and YKK | Available motor rating, supply voltage, starting method, enclosure protection and site cooling conditions. |
| Motor installations in classified explosive gas atmospheres | Appropriately specified YBX-series, YBBP or high-voltage YB3 motor | Required protection marking, site classification, certification, electrical rating and any variable-speed operating requirements. |
| Motor installations in classified combustible dust atmospheres | Appropriately specified YFBX-series, YFBBP3 or YBFBX5 motor | Dust-related protection requirements, temperature limits, certification and suitability of the selected configuration. |
This table supports initial product selection. It does not mean that every listed series or configuration is suitable for every fan, blower or hazardous area. Final suitability must be confirmed for the selected motor and installation.
General-Purpose Fan Motors: YE3, YE4 and YE5
The YE series provides general-purpose three-phase induction motor options for industrial equipment. The supplied catalogue describes these series as totally enclosed, self-fan-cooled squirrel-cage motors.
For example, the YE3 reference specifications include 380 V or 400 V, 50 Hz, IP55 enclosure protection, IC411 cooling and continuous duty S1. These specifications apply to the documented YE3 range and should not be assumed to apply to every motor series or special configuration.
When comparing YE3, YE4 and YE5 options, request the technical data for the required output and pole configuration. Compare rated efficiency together with starting characteristics, dimensions and suitability for the intended operating conditions.
Do not assume that a standard motor configuration is suitable for every variable-frequency drive or speed range. Where speed control is required, identify it at the enquiry stage.
Variable-Speed Fan and Blower Drives: YPT3
The YPT3 series is designed for operation with a variable-frequency drive. The catalogue specifies a dedicated insulation system for inverter supply, IP55 enclosure protection and IC416 cooling with a separately driven ventilation system.
Selection requires the minimum, normal and maximum operating speeds of the driven equipment. The fan or blower's permitted speed range and load requirements must be checked alongside the motor's operating limits.
The YPT3 catalogue contains different operating ranges for different configurations. Do not assume that every model can operate throughout the same frequency range. Request confirmation of the applicable constant-torque and constant-power ranges for the selected motor.
Identify the proposed variable-frequency drive and its electrical supply.
Provide the required operating speed range and available equipment load data.
Confirm the independent cooling fan's supply and operating requirements.
Specify whether the enquiry covers the motor only or also requires assistance with drive selection.
A separate variable-frequency drive should not be assumed to be included in a YPT3 motor quotation. Energy savings also depend on the complete system and its operating profile; a fixed saving percentage cannot be established from the motor series alone.
High-Voltage Fan and Blower Motors: Y, YKS and YKK
The Y, YKS and YKK families can be evaluated where a fan or blower installation requires a high-voltage induction motor. These families use different ventilation and cooling arrangements.
Y series: catalogue options include open and duct-ventilated arrangements. Confirm the required enclosure protection and the suitability of the installation's ventilation conditions.
YKS series: uses an air-to-water cooling arrangement. Confirm the availability and specified conditions of the cooling-water supply.
YKK series: uses an air-to-air cooling arrangement. Confirm ambient conditions and the space required for cooling and maintenance.
Provide the required voltage, output, operating speed, starting method and available driven-equipment data. The combined catalogue ranges for these families do not establish availability of every power, voltage and pole-count combination.
Mechanical and Starting Requirements
Matching rated power alone is not sufficient. The motor's mechanical arrangement and starting capability must also be compatible with the fan or blower.
| Selection Item | Information to Provide |
|---|---|
| Connection method | Direct coupling, belt drive or another transmission arrangement. |
| Mounting and dimensions | Foot or flange mounting, shaft dimensions, installation drawing and available space. |
| Mechanical loads | Specified radial or axial loads, including belt-drive information where applicable. |
| Starting conditions | Starting method, starts per hour, required acceleration time and equipment inertia or starting-load data if available. |
| Operating speed | Normal speed, any required adjustment range and the equipment manufacturer's permitted speed limits. |
| Operating duty | Continuous or intermittent operation, daily running hours and relevant changes in load. |
Dust, Gas and Special Operating Environments
Describe both the environment around the motor and the medium handled by the fan or blower. The motor may be installed outside the air stream or exposed to different conditions from the driven equipment.
For a classified explosive gas or combustible dust atmosphere, provide the site classification and required motor protection marking. Selection must be checked against the certification of the specific motor configuration.
An IP enclosure rating is not, by itself, evidence of explosion protection. A gas-protected motor must not be assumed to have the required dust protection, and motor approval does not establish approval of the complete fan or blower assembly.
High-temperature service, emergency smoke extraction, corrosive atmospheres and other special duties require separate confirmation. A general-purpose ventilation application description does not establish suitability for these services.
Replacing an Existing Fan or Blower Motor
For replacement enquiries, provide a clear motor nameplate photograph, photographs of the installation and any available mounting or shaft drawings.
Also explain why the motor is being replaced. A dimensional replacement, a change in supply voltage, a move to variable-speed operation and an efficiency upgrade involve different checks.
Our team can use this information to discuss the proposed replacement specification. Interchangeability must be confirmed rather than inferred from a matching power rating or frame size.
