Motor Selection for Grain Handling and Powder Processing

Grain handling and powder processing equipment requires motors
matched to the driven load, operating duty and installation
environment. Where combustible dust is present, motor selection
must also address the site's hazardous-area classification
and temperature requirements.
Shangli offers dust-protected motor series, dedicated variable-frequency motor options and general-purpose induction motors for technical evaluation. Our offering includes ATEX- and IECEx-certified motor options, with the applicable certification scope confirmed for the selected model.
Whether the enquiry concerns a conveyor, mill, mixer or dust-extraction fan, the starting point is the equipment specification and the conditions at the motor's actual installation location.
Applications We Can Evaluate
Typical enquiries may involve grain conveying, flour and feed processing, powder mixing, material transfer, packaging equipment and dust-extraction systems. These applications involve different mechanical loads and operating requirements.
Provide the equipment manufacturer's required motor power, speed, mounting arrangement and starting information. Also identify the material being handled and any available dust-hazard assessment.
The material name alone does not establish the required protection specification. Selection should use the site's approved classification and the relevant properties of the actual dust involved.
Motor Options for Different Installation Requirements
| Requirement | Candidate Motor Series | Selection Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-speed equipment in classified dust atmospheres | Appropriately specified YFBX3 or YFBX4 | Required dust-protection marking, certificate scope, surface-temperature limit, output and mounting arrangement. |
| Variable-speed equipment in classified dust atmospheres | Appropriately specified YFBBP3 | Permitted inverter operation, load and speed range, cooling requirements and applicable dust protection. |
| Requirements for both gas and dust protection markings | Appropriately specified YBFBX5 | Verification of both protection markings and their certificate conditions for the intended installation. |
| General-purpose drives in non-hazardous areas | YE3, YE4 and YE5 | Electrical rating, efficiency specification, enclosure protection, starting requirements and environmental conditions. |
| Variable-speed drives in non-hazardous areas | YPT3 | Required torque and speed range, inverter compatibility and independent cooling requirements. |
These are candidate series for initial technical review. The table does not establish that every model or configuration carries the same protection marking or certification.
Dust-Protected Motors: YFBX3 and YFBX4
The supplied Shangli catalogue describes YFBX3 and YFBX4 motor series for industrial combustible dust environments. The appropriate configuration must be selected against the equipment requirements and site classification.
The YFBX3 catalogue describes a totally enclosed, self-fan-cooled three-phase induction motor with IP65 enclosure protection and IC411 cooling. These specifications should not be transferred automatically to other series.
For a new project, request the current technical data, nameplate marking and applicable certificate for the proposed motor. Catalogue terminology and protection descriptions may differ between product generations.
Select the required power, speed and mechanical arrangement alongside the dust-protection requirements. A matching electrical rating alone does not confirm suitability for the installation.
Variable-Speed Dust-Protected Drives: YFBBP3
The YFBBP3 series is described in the catalogue as a dust-protected three-phase induction motor for variable-frequency operation, with forced-air cooling.
For a variable-speed conveyor, feeder, mixer or other processing machine, provide the required minimum, normal and maximum operating speeds together with the equipment's torque or power requirements.
Confirm the selected motor's permitted frequency range, cooling arrangement and compatibility with the proposed inverter. The equipment manufacturer's operating limits must also be respected.
Identify the proposed inverter and incoming power supply.
Provide the operating speed range and load information.
Confirm any separate cooling-fan supply requirements.
Identify required temperature monitoring and protective functions.
Confirm the applicable certificate conditions for inverter operation.
Do not assume that a fixed-speed dust-protected motor is approved for unrestricted inverter operation. The motor-and-drive configuration requires its own review.
Motors with Gas and Dust Protection Markings
Some processing facilities require equipment with both gas and dust protection markings. The YBFBX5 catalogue describes configurations combining flameproof gas protection and dust protection by enclosure.
Where both are required, provide the complete project specification so that each protection marking can be checked against the intended installation.
Dual marking should not be interpreted as automatic approval for a simultaneous mixture of flammable gas and combustible dust. Such conditions require a separate assessment.
Match the Motor to the Processing Equipment
Conveyors, Feeders and Elevators
Provide the transmission arrangement, required output speed and whether the equipment starts empty or loaded. For geared drives, include the gearbox ratio and motor interface requirements.
State any frequent-starting, reversing, braking or holding requirements. These functions should not be assumed to be included in a standard motor quotation.
Mills and Mixers
Provide the equipment manufacturer's motor specification, starting-load information, operating duty and any expected changes in load during processing.
Where available, include equipment inertia and required acceleration time. These details help define the starting performance needed from the motor and starting system.
Dust-Extraction Fans and Blowers
Identify the required power, operating speed and whether the motor is directly coupled or belt driven. Describe both the material handled by the extraction system and the atmosphere around the motor.
A motor's certification does not establish certification of the complete fan, dust collector or extraction system. Equipment-level protection requirements must be assessed separately.
Information Needed for Dust-Hazard Selection
| Selection Item | Information to Provide |
|---|---|
| Area classification | The site's approved dust-zone classification and required equipment protection level or category. |
| Material and dust properties | Material description, specified dust group and relevant dust-test or hazard-assessment information. |
| Temperature requirements | Required maximum equipment surface temperature and available dust-cloud and dust-layer ignition data. |
| Dust accumulation | Expected deposits, relevant dust-layer conditions and the site's cleaning arrangements. |
| Ambient conditions | Temperature, altitude, indoor or outdoor installation, moisture and corrosion exposure. |
| Certification | Required ATEX, IECEx or other project approval, together with the destination country. |
Both suspended dust and accumulated dust can be relevant to the assessment. Temperature selection must use the applicable site data and certificate conditions rather than a generic temperature value for an entire industry.
An IP rating describes enclosure protection; it does not by itself establish suitability for an explosive dust atmosphere. Likewise, a gas-only protection marking is not a substitute for the required dust protection.
Cleaning, Cooling and Food-Processing Requirements
Describe the site's cleaning methods, moisture exposure and any cleaning chemicals. Suitability for washdown, corrosive conditions or hygienic installations must be specified and confirmed separately.
A motor used in a food-processing facility should not automatically be described as food-grade or suitable for direct food contact. Dust protection and hygienic design address different requirements.
Allow for the selected motor's cooling and maintenance requirements in the equipment layout. Cleaning and inspection should follow the motor instructions and the site's hazardous-area procedures.
ATEX and IECEx Certification Support
Shangli offers ATEX- and IECEx-certified motor options for hazardous-area projects. Tell us which certification scheme and protection specification your project requires so that we can identify an appropriate certified configuration.
The applicable certificate must cover the proposed model, rating and protection arrangement. Any special conditions of use and permitted operating conditions must also be included in the selection review.
Specify the required certification documents, dimensional drawings and testing documentation when requesting a quotation. Documentation and inspection scope will be confirmed for the selected product.
Replacing an Existing Processing Motor
For a replacement enquiry, provide clear photographs of the complete motor nameplate, including its protection marking and certificate details where shown. Include mounting dimensions and photographs of the installed drive arrangement.
Explain whether the replacement is intended to retain the original operating conditions or introduce changes such as variable-speed control, a different supply voltage or higher output.
Matching the old motor's power and frame size is not sufficient. Protection scope, mechanical compatibility, starting performance and operating conditions must also be checked.
