Motor Selection for Mining and Mineral Processing Equipment

Mining and mineral processing operations use electric motors
for crushing, conveying, ventilation, pumping and other
equipment duties. Each application requires a motor matched
to its load, starting conditions, electrical supply and
installation environment.
Shangli offers low-voltage induction motors, dedicated inverter-duty motors, high-voltage induction motors and explosion-protected motor options for technical evaluation. Our offering includes ATEX- and IECEx-certified options, with certification coverage confirmed for the selected model.
Begin with the driven equipment specification and the actual installation location. A surface processing plant, an outdoor conveyor and an underground coal-mine installation should not be treated as having identical motor requirements.
Applications We Can Discuss
Crushers and associated material-processing equipment.
Belt conveyors, feeders and material-transfer systems.
Ventilation fans and process-air blowers.
Dewatering, process-water and other pump drives.
Auxiliary equipment within mineral processing plants.
These application areas define the scope of an initial technical discussion. They do not establish that a standard motor configuration is suitable for every machine within that application.
For specialised equipment, provide the original equipment manufacturer's motor specification. This is particularly important where the machine requires unusual starting performance, mechanical loads or operating duties.
Motor Families to Consider
| Requirement | Candidate Motor Series | Selection Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Low-voltage drives in non-hazardous areas | YE3, YE4 and YE5 | Output, speed, starting performance, efficiency specification, mechanical loads and environmental conditions. |
| Variable-speed drives in non-hazardous areas | YPT3 | Required torque and speed range, inverter compatibility, operating duty and independent cooling requirements. |
| High-voltage drives in non-hazardous areas | Y, YKS and YKK | Available rating, supply voltage, starting requirements, cooling arrangement and installation conditions. |
| Industrial explosive gas atmospheres | Appropriately specified YBX-series, YBBP or high-voltage YB3 motor | Exact protection marking, certificate coverage, electrical rating and permitted operating conditions. |
| Industrial combustible dust atmospheres | Appropriately specified YFBX-series, YFBBP3 or YBFBX5 motor | Dust-protection requirements, surface-temperature limits and certification for the selected installation. |
| Coal-mine applications requiring mining-specific protection | Selected mining-marked configurations, including relevant YBX3 or high-voltage YB3 options | Mining approval scope, exact protection marking, permitted installation location and destination-country requirements. |
These are candidate product families, not interchangeable selections. The same series name may include configurations with different ratings, protection markings and approval scopes.
Crushers and Material-Processing Equipment
Crusher motor selection should use the equipment manufacturer's load and starting requirements. Required running power alone is not sufficient to confirm that a motor can accelerate the machine under the specified conditions.
Provide the crusher type, operating speed, starting method and whether starting takes place with an empty or loaded machine. Include available load-torque and inertia data, required acceleration time and expected starts per hour.
Depending on the project, a low-voltage or high-voltage motor may be evaluated. Starting capability, thermal limits, shaft loads and the electrical supply must be reviewed together before a configuration is proposed.
Do not assume that a general-purpose motor has a dedicated crusher-duty design, a particular overload capability or a specified high starting torque unless these characteristics are confirmed in its technical data.
Conveyors and Feeders
Conveyor and feeder enquiries should identify the transmission arrangement, required output speed and starting conditions. State whether the equipment must start under load and whether operation includes frequent starts, reversing or speed adjustment.
For geared drives, provide the gearbox ratio and motor interface requirements. Where the motor drives a pulley or other externally loaded component, include the applicable shaft-load information.
Required motor power and equipment operating speed.
Empty or loaded starting conditions.
Gearbox, coupling or belt-drive arrangement.
Operating duty and starts per hour.
Any braking, holding or reversing requirements.
Required speed-control range.
Brakes, backstops, gearboxes and control equipment are not automatically included with a motor. Identify the required supply scope when requesting a quotation.
Ventilation Fans and Blowers
Fan and blower motor selection requires the equipment's specified power, operating speed, starting information and mechanical arrangement. For variable-speed equipment, provide the manufacturer's permitted speed range.
Describe the conditions at the motor location as well as the atmosphere handled by the fan. A surface process-air fan and a fan associated with an underground coal-mine installation require separate assessments.
The motor's certification does not establish approval of the complete ventilation assembly. Any system-level or safety-critical operating requirements must be specified separately.
Dewatering and Process-Water Pump Drives
Pump motor enquiries should include the required shaft power, speed, mounting arrangement and operating duty. Provide the pump manufacturer's specification and available performance data where possible.
General-purpose low-voltage motors or appropriate high-voltage motor families can be evaluated according to the supply and equipment requirements. Hazardous-area installations require a motor with the corresponding protection and approvals.
Identify moisture, flooding and cleaning exposure explicitly. An enclosed motor should not be assumed suitable for submerged operation. Submersible service requires a separately confirmed motor design.
Variable-Speed Operation
The YPT3 catalogue describes a dedicated inverter-duty induction motor with IP55 enclosure protection and IC416 cooling using a separately driven ventilation system. It is a candidate for suitable non-hazardous variable-speed applications.
Provide the required minimum, normal and maximum speeds together with the load requirements throughout that range. Confirm the selected model's permitted operating range and the supply requirements of its independent cooling fan.
For hazardous-area applications, a dedicated explosion-protected variable-speed configuration requires a separate review of the motor, inverter, cooling and certificate conditions.
Neither inverter compatibility nor a particular speed range should be assumed for every motor within a general product family.
High-Voltage Motor and Cooling Selection
The Y, YKS and YKK families provide high-voltage induction motor options with different ventilation and cooling arrangements.
Y series: catalogue options include open and duct-ventilated arrangements. Suitability must be assessed against the site's air quality and ventilation provisions.
YKS series: uses an air-to-water cooling arrangement. Confirm cooling-water availability and the specified supply conditions.
YKK series: uses an air-to-air cooling arrangement. Confirm ambient conditions and the space required for cooling and maintenance.
These general-purpose families are not substitutes for a required flameproof motor. Where high-voltage flameproof construction is specified, the high-voltage YB3 family requires its own technical and certification review.
Surface Installations and Underground Coal-Mine Requirements
Do not classify an installation solely by whether it is above or below ground. Use the site's approved classification and mining requirements. Surface installations associated with a mine may also have mining-specific hazards.
The supplied Shangli catalogue includes selected configurations marked for Group I mining applications. Its mining descriptions identify use outside coal extraction working faces; they do not establish unrestricted suitability for all underground machinery or locations.
Industrial gas or dust protection markings should not be treated as equivalent to mining-specific approval. For a coal-mine enquiry, provide the exact required marking, intended location, equipment duty and applicable national mining approval requirements.
Any requirements for operation, shutdown or continued service during a hazardous condition must be defined by the project and checked against the equipment's approval scope.
Dust, Altitude and Environmental Conditions
Mining sites can present demanding environmental conditions. Specify the actual site conditions rather than relying on the general description “mining duty.”
| Condition | Information to Provide |
|---|---|
| Temperature and altitude | Minimum and maximum ambient temperatures and installation altitude. |
| Dust exposure | Dust characteristics, expected accumulation and whether the area is classified for combustible dust. |
| Water and weather | Indoor or outdoor installation, rain, spray, humidity and condensation exposure. |
| Corrosion | Relevant chemicals, corrosive atmosphere and required protective treatment. |
| Mechanical environment | Installation vibration, external shaft loads and equipment mounting requirements. |
| Cooling and maintenance | Available cooling provisions, ventilation clearance and access for inspection and servicing. |
Dust ingress protection and explosion protection are different requirements. An IP rating does not, by itself, establish suitability for a combustible dust atmosphere.
Do not transfer the ambient or altitude limits of one catalogue series to another. Requirements outside the selected motor's documented operating conditions need technical confirmation.
Monitoring and Certification Documentation
Depending on the selected series and configuration, requirements may include winding temperature monitoring, bearing temperature monitoring or anti-condensation heaters. Specify the required devices and interfaces during selection.
Shangli offers ATEX- and IECEx-certified motor options. For each project, the proposed model, rating and protection arrangement must fall within the applicable certificate scope.
State the destination country and any additional mining approvals required by the purchaser or local authority. ATEX or IECEx certification should not be assumed to replace every destination-specific mining requirement.
