What Information Do You Need for a Motor Quotation?

To request a useful motor quotation, start with the driven equipment, required output, supply voltage and frequency, operating speed, mounting arrangement and site conditions. Include any variable-speed or hazardous-area requirements, together with the quantity and delivery destination.
If you are replacing an existing motor, a clear nameplate photograph and a mounting drawing are particularly helpful. If some details are unknown, mark them as “to be confirmed” rather than guessing.
Essential Motor Enquiry Checklist
| Item | What to Provide |
|---|---|
| Application | The equipment being driven, such as a pump, fan, compressor or conveyor, and whether this is a new installation or a replacement. |
| Motor Model and Output | The complete model designation, if known, and required rated output in kW. State whether the power comes from an existing nameplate or an equipment selection. |
| Voltage and Frequency | The actual three-phase supply voltage and frequency. For a replacement, include the voltage and connection markings shown on the existing nameplate. |
| Speed | Required motor shaft speed in rpm, pole count if known, and the operating speed range for variable-speed duties. |
| Starting and Drive Method | Whether the motor will use direct-on-line starting, star-delta starting, a soft starter or a variable-frequency drive. Include available drive information. |
| Mounting and Dimensions | Mounting designation, such as IM B3, IM B5 or IM B35, together with frame size, shaft dimensions and any installation-space restrictions. |
| Operating Duty | Continuous or intermittent operation, expected running hours, starts per hour and any demanding starting or load conditions. |
| Environment | Indoor or outdoor installation, ambient temperature, altitude, humidity, dust and exposure to corrosive substances or water. |
| Protection and Cooling | Required IP rating and cooling arrangement, if specified. Include any ventilation restrictions or available cooling-water information. |
| Efficiency and Documentation | Required efficiency class or grade and the associated standard, destination-market requirements, certificates and test documents. |
| Accessories | Any required winding or bearing temperature monitoring, anti-condensation heaters or other project-specific items. |
| Order Details | Quantity, delivery country and city, requested delivery date and whether the requirement is for a sample, a single project or repeat orders. |
For Replacement Motors: Send More Than the Power Rating
Matching the kW rating alone is not enough to establish interchangeability. The electrical requirements, operating characteristics and mechanical interface also need to match the equipment.
Where possible, include:
A clear photograph of the complete motor nameplate.
Photographs of the motor, driven equipment and coupling.
A dimensional drawing showing the shaft, mounting feet or flange and available installation space.
Terminal box position, viewed from the drive end, and cable-entry requirements.
Any problems with the existing installation, such as difficult starting, overheating or insufficient space.
If a drawing is unavailable, provide photographs and measured dimensions, clearly identifying which measurements are approximate.
Additional Information for Different Motor Types
Variable-Speed Motors
For a variable-frequency-drive application, provide the drive make and model if available, supply voltage, required speed range and load characteristics. State whether the equipment needs substantial torque at low speed and describe the intended operating cycle.
Shangli’s catalogue includes dedicated variable-speed series such as YPT3, YBBP and YFBBP3. Their application and protection requirements differ, so the series should be selected for the actual duty rather than on variable-speed capability alone.
Motors for Hazardous Areas
Include the hazardous-area classification and motor requirements specified by the project engineer or responsible site authority. Provide the required explosion-protection marking, ambient temperature range, destination country and certification requirements.
A request for an “explosion-proof motor” is not specific enough to determine the correct configuration. The selected motor and its certification must be checked against the application. Do not infer coverage from a series name alone.
High-Voltage Motors
For high-voltage enquiries, include the site electrical specification, starting method, driven-equipment data and any limits on starting current. Provide load torque and inertia information where available.
Shangli’s Y, YKS and YKK catalogue ranges use different cooling arrangements. Describe the installation environment, ventilation conditions and available cooling utilities so that the appropriate arrangement can be reviewed.
Use the Exact Model, Not Just the Series Name
A series name identifies a product family, not a complete specification. For example, the catalogue designation YPT3-200L-4 identifies the YPT3 series, a 200 mm shaft centre height, an L frame-length designation and four poles. It does not, by itself, provide every electrical rating, installation detail or accessory requirement.
Include the full model and rated data whenever available. Treat catalogue tables as a starting point and confirm the final configuration in the quotation and technical documents.
